3 Mold Prevention Steps for Your Bathroom

Three Steps to Prevent Mold in Your Bathroom

Even if you scrupulously clean your bathroom, there is still a possibility for mold growth. This is primarily because bathrooms are often areas of high humidity. The good news, however, is that once you recognize that humidity is the top source of bathroom mildew, you can take steps to reduce the excess moisture. (If you've already noticed mold or mildew, contact water damage cleanup and repair professionals right away.)

One of the best ways to reduce humidity levels in the bathroom for mold prevention is to provide proper ventilation. Many homes are equipped with fans in in the ceiling that carry away the moisture-heavy steam from hot showers. Make sure your ventilation fans are equipped to handle the amount of humidity in the room. For example, if there is still condensation on the surfaces of the room when the fan has been running, you know that you need more ventilation. It may be necessary to open doors and windows to compensate for the lack of other airflow.

Daily Cleaning

Once you have adequate ventilation in the room, turn your attention to towels and floor mats. These surfaces are often damp and could easily become home to mold spores. You may notice that your bathroom décor smells musty or looks dusty. These are two signs of mold in the bathroom. Replace and launder towels and rugs regularly.

Comprehensive Maintenance

Ongoing maintenance is a vital component of mold prevention. This refers to replacing deteriorating caulk around the tub to replacing the wax ring under your toilet on a regular basis. The moisture from steamy showers can make its way past gaps in tile grout. Pooling water under the base of the toilet can host an entire colony of mold before you notice any water damage. The steps you take to keep your bathroom in top repair are essential to preventing mold.
Remember, water damage isn't the only source of mold in your bathroom. Prevent new growth by adding ventilation, removing sources of moisture, and focusing on appropriate maintenance. These steps can prevent a lot of expensive and trouble in your Grosse Pointe Woods, MI, home.

Three Ways To Prevent a Dryer Fire

Clothing dryers are a standard appliance found in the average household. But as commonplace as this appliance may be, failure to properly install or operate a home dryer can lead to the start of a lint fire. Prevent a dryer fire from starting in your own Grosse Pointe Park, MI, home by following these 3 basic steps:

1. Professional Dyer Installation

From the time of purchase, you should opt to have your dryer professionally installed. Trained specialists who install home appliances should have the correct tools and knowledge to install your dryer. Whether your dyer requires special ventilation hoses or an adapter for the electrical outlet, your appliance installation technician can help you to get things set up safely the first time around.

2. Follow Manufacturer Instructions and Clothing Labels

Once your dryer is properly installed and ready for operation, be sure you follow the guidelines found in your user manual. See what materials and fabric softeners can be safely used in conjunction with your particular model. Likewise, follow drying directions found on clothing labels before throwing them in after washing. Look for clothing label instruction warnings such as:

  • Do not tumble dry
  • Line dry only
  • Flammable materials such as rubber, plastic, or foam

3. Perform Routine Cleaning and Maintenance

When it comes to maintaining a safe dryer, always start by cleaning the lint trap frequently. Empty the lint trap between each drying cycle. Never operate your dryer without a properly installed lint catcher. Without it, debris can become backed up and increase your risk of starting a lint fire. Other regular maintenance practices to consider include:

  • Vent pipe cleaning every 3 months with a dryer exhaust snake
  • Annual inspection of gas operated dryers to avoid gas leaks
  • Regular inspection of outside dryer vent to ensure dirt, debris or wildlife is not blocking it

A dryer left uncared for could be a recipe for disaster. A lint fire in Grosse Pointe Park, MI, may require special help from a fire restoration company. Use these 3 handy tips to prevent a dryer fire from starting in your home.

Blasting Mold Away

Technician wearing protective gear while removing mold Mold soda blasting may be the answer.

No matter the age or specific location, most homes in Harper Woods, MI, are prone to mold growth. What many homeowners don't realize, however, is that some mold cleanup strategies work better than others. If the crawlspace, attic, or other hard-to-reach area in your home has fallen victim to fungal spreading, mold soda blasting may be the answer.

What Is It?

A powerful technique indeed, mold soda blasting is a process that uses different types of media to clean mold from surfaces. While baking soda is the most common material used in combating mold damage, dry ice and sand are also used. This strategy is relatively new and can take less time and work than older methods.

How Does It Work?

Using a high-pressure compressed air spray, the mold cleaning professionals remove mold from tricky spots. Although baking soda is soft in texture, its granules have a scratchy surface that can break up mold. Afraid of inflicting damage on your home itself? Not to worry; mold soda blasting is tough on the fungal culprit but easy on mold-affected surfaces.

What Are the Steps?

The experts stress the importance of addressing a mold issue quickly. Once you’ve put the cleanup plan into motion, the pros will inspect your home to determine areas of mold growth. Be sure to inform the mold cleaners of any past flooding or other water damage so they can pick the right solutions. The crawlspace is usually a hot spot for mold issues in most homes. After the cleanup process has reached its end, the professionals may vacuum the area and wipe off surfaces.

Whether you have a mold-infested crawlspace, or you suspect the spores may have extended into other parts of the house, it is crucial to delve into cleanup beyond surface-level. Not only is mold soda blasting a heavy-duty form of cleaning; it is also an innovative strategy that aligns with busy lifestyles and tight schedules.

A specialist removing mold from of a room SERVPRO is able to assist you with mold cleaning of your artwork by offering you advice about the best way to repair it.

How to Restore a Mold-Affected Painting in 3 Easy Steps

When flooding affects your Harper Woods, MI, home, the results can be devastating. However, when it comes to damaged items, few are more difficult to salvage than paintings. Mold damage can be particularly difficult to handle, but there are a few ways you can eradicate it. From when you first retrieve your painting from a flooded area to reframing, mold cleaning can be possible if you follow a few simple steps.

1. Remove the Painting From the Flooded Area

Once flood waters have receded and the area is safe to enter, removing the painting from a flooded room as soon as possible can reduce the risk of mold forming on the canvas. Take the painting to a room that has been dried and where you can set it aside, away from sunlight and high humidity. Avoid sealing it in any type of container, as this may create humid conditions and encourage further mold growth.

2. Remove the Wooden Frame

If your painting has a wooden frame, you may want to remove it to prevent further mold damage from taking place. Because wood is an organic material, mold spores may attach to it and begin to feed and spread once the frame has been exposed to flood waters. Detach the painting from the frame, but try to keep the actual piece of artwork flat to prevent curling.

3. Call a Remediation Service

Flood cleanup and remediation specialists may be able to assist you with mold cleaning of your artwork by offering you advice about the best way to repair it. They may also offer techniques for removing mold from the canvas without compromising the paint. This can be an important factor in salvaging a painting, as any mold left behind may start to spread

Flooding in your Harper Woods, MI, home can affect valuable artwork, especially in the case of mold growth. However, mold cleaning of your paintings can be possible when you understand how and why mold appears and which steps you can take to prevent it.

3 Steps To Take In a Mold Damage Emergency

Three Steps To Take After Finding Mold

When a homeowner notices any amount of mold growing within a residence in Grosse Pointe Park, MI, this can constitute a mold emergency. It is important to take action in case the fungus is black mold or another toxigenic species. Here are three steps that any homeowner can take after finding mold at home.

1. Turn Off the Flow of Central Air
The central heating and air conditioning system in a home can spread mold spores. This is particularly the case if the HVAC system itself has a moisture problem and mold has started to grow inside of the air ducts. Leave this system off until mold cleanup is complete, including air duct cleaning if necessary.

2. Shut Off the Water Supply to Leaks
Leaking supply lines can cause clean, treated water to saturate building materials in a residence. Although this type of water damage starts as Category One, it can degrade to Category Two after filtering through building materials and end up Category Three damage if left standing. Black mold is more likely to develop in locations that are constantly moist.

3. Arrange for A Mold Damage Inspection
A homeowner who smells a musty odor but does not see visible mold growth may be tempted to hunt for mold. It is not advisable to disturb surfaces on or behind which mold may be growing. Trained professionals can locate infestations with minimal release or spreading of spores and recommend containment and mold cleanup measures.
It is impossible to identify the species or toxicity level of mold based solely on a visual inspection. Black mold appears green through much of its growth cycle and other species of mold may look black. Lab analysis is necessary to accurately identify mold. Cleanup should occur as soon as possible, but these mitigation measures can help to prevent mold from spreading throughout a home in Grosse Pointe Park, MI.

Five Common Fungal Home Invaders

Mold growth is a very common issue that the majority of homeowners do have to face at some point. The first step when it comes to protecting your home in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI, is identifying which species of mold that you're currently dealing with. Here are five of some of the most common fungal home invaders.

1. Cladosporium
This type of mold is most commonly found growing in fabrics and textiles, such as upholstery or carpeting, although it can also be found underneath your floorboards or in your cabinets. It's characterized by its brown or olive green coloration.

2. Acremonium
While this species starts off tiny and somewhat moist, it transforms into a more powdery substance as it ages. This can be dangerous, as it's most often found growing in air humidifiers and window sealants.

3. Alternaria
The most common type of allergenic mold is often found growing in moist environments, such as your bathroom. It's categorized by its velvety texture that sprouts brown or dark green hairs.

4. Stachybotrys
Also known as the infamous black mold, this species is most often found growing in high humidity environments that come into frequent contact with moisture. As the name implies, it's usually black or dark green in color and may have a slimy or fuzzy texture. It's perhaps the most common species of household mold.

5. Chaetomium
You're likely to find this type of mold growth in your basement foundation or in your roof after your home has experienced severe water damage. It has a cottony texture and starts off with a gray or white color before fading to a darker brown or black.
Mold growth is a very common, yet serious issue that you needs to be fixed as soon as you discover it. Spores can spread quickly, wrecking widespread havoc across your property. Contact mold remediation experts for help eradicating any pesky fungi you might come across.

Preventing Bread Mold

1/26/2021 (Permalink)

mold on bread loaf Bread mold is a common occurrence that isn't necessarily indicative of a larger mold problem

It's possible for mold to grow on almost anything, as long as there's an adequate amount of moisture for it to thrive off of. Even so, some items are significantly more prone to mold growth than others, including bread. Read on to learn how to prevent bread mold from forming in your kitchen in Grosse Pointe Park, MI.

Mold Prevention Tips

The following tips can help prevent mold from forming on your freshly baked or bought bread:

Consume the bread as quickly as possible: You don't necessarily have to feast on the entire loaf the second you return from the grocery store, but you should attempt to avoid storing it for long periods of time.

Store your bread in a breadbox: Breadboxes are nifty tools designed to keep and store bread for prolonged periods. They help keep your bread dry by preventing moisture from building up. Even so, they can only do their job for so long, so don't assume that your bread is automatically safe.

Use ingredients that contain oil when baking bread: If you prefer to bake your own bread, opt for ingredients that contain oils. This includes eggs, milk, butter and more. These ingredients help prolong your bread's freshness.

Store bread in the freezer for prolonged periods: If you really do need to keep your bread fresh for a long time, your best bet is to store it in the freezer. Mold spores aren't capable of surviving in conditions that cold.

What to Do When You Find Bread Mold
Even if you do everything right, safety is not always guaranteed. If you do find fungus growth on your bread, then you need to throw it away. Store the moldy bread in a plastic bag before disposing of it in a covered trash can. Next, thoroughly clean the area where the bread was found, as the spores can spread quickly. Fridge mold can quickly infect the rest of your fresh ingredients.
Bread mold is a common occurrence that isn't necessarily indicative of a larger mold problem. If you do suspect a bigger issue, contact mold remediation experts for support.

Mold Prevention Strategies

Digital temperature and humidity control Keep indoor humidity below 45% in your home to avoid the possibility of mold growth.

Water damage and many other factors can lead to mold growth in your Grosse Pointe, MI, home. Fortunately, there are many things that homeowners can do to prevent a mold infestation.

Mold Requirements

Understanding what mold needs in order to grow is the first step toward mold prevention. Although mold spores are abundant and it may seem like mold can grow anywhere, there are actually three things that mold needs in order to thrive:

  • Warmth
  • Food
  • Moisture

Unfortunately, most indoor temperatures are suitable for mold growth. Additionally, mold can derive nutrients from a variety of common materials. Dust, paper products, food and many other substances can foster a mold infestation. Because it is impossible to remove all food sources, the easiest way to prevent mold is to control the moisture in the home.

Mold Prevention
Water damage, leaks, spills, and even high humidity can all lead to mold problems. Cleaning up standing water as soon as possible and keeping indoor humidity below 50% can greatly reduce the likelihood of an infestation. It may be necessary to run a dehumidifier in particularly wet areas, such as bathrooms and basements.
In addition to controlling moisture levels, reducing the number of mold spores in the air can also decrease the chances of an infestation. HEPA air purifiers can trap the spores before they have a chance to colonize.
Depending on your home’s unique environment, it may be impossible to prevent all mold growth. However, if you routinely check your home for signs of an infestation, you may be able to catch the problem before significant damage occurs. Check all areas of the home, paying close attention to humid locations and any areas that have had mold problems before.
Whether you are trying to clean up water damage before it leads to mold or dealing with damage from mold itself, a certified restoration company can help you with the process. They have the experience and equipment to get your home back to normal quickly and safely.

In fact, disaster restoration is a complex process that requires safety precautions, technical expertise, and patience. It also necessitates that one understand how professionals safely sanitize dangerous regions of the house, so they no longer pose health risks or safety issues to house residents. To restore a home following a disaster, experts are able to identify hazards and use safety gear efficiently. Additionally, you must be able to determine which personal possessions are salvageable and which are not.

Following a fire, your air may remain contaminated with carbon monoxide for a few hours or even several days. This is one reason why hiring a team of professional remediation specialists is important. These individuals have the proper breathing apparatuses and safety gear necessary to effectively remove and dispose of unstable surfaces and hazardous materials.

Disaster Restoration And Water Issues
Floods and fires involve water and can thereby precipitate the onset of damage from toxic mold. SERVPRO® Pledges Ongoing Support to the American Red Cross Disaster Responder Program

Red Cross recognizes SERVPRO for their contribution to disaster preparedness and recovery efforts

Grosse Pointe Farms, MI (Grassroots Newswire) June 1, 2016 -- The American Red Cross recently recognized SERVPRO®, a cleanup and restoration company, for participation in its Disaster Responder Program.  As a Disaster Responder Program member, SERVPRO pledges a donation to the Red Cross in advance of disasters, allowing the organization to respond quickly and effectively to nearly 66,000 disasters annually, most of which are home fires. SERVPRO is entering their third year of partnership with the Red Cross; their donations to the organization to date exceed one million dollars.

According to statistics cited by the Red Cross, seven people die in a home fire each day in the U.S. Aiming to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent by the end of 2019, the Red Cross launched a Home Fire Campaign in October of 2014. The support of SERVPRO and other Disaster Responder Program members allows the Red Cross to pursue their home fire prevention goals while they continue to provide critical services to disaster victims.

“One of the reasons home fires account for the majority of the disasters the Red Cross responds to annually is that the risk for home fires exists all year long,” said Mentor Hyska, owner of SERVPRO of Grosse Pointe. “Statistics compiled by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) show the majority of home fires are related to unattended cooking accidents – and cooking is something most people do every day.”

SERVPRO®Named to Entrepreneur’s Top 10 Franchise List

for 7th Consecutive Year

Cleanup and restoration franchisor retains top ranking in restoration services category and climbs to #4 ranking overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings

Grosse Pointe Farms, MI (Grassroots Newswire) January 19, 2016 - SERVPRO®, a cleanup and restoration franchise company, maintains its hold on the top ranking in the Restoration Services industry for the 13th consecutive year and moves up to the number four spot overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings from Entrepreneur magazine.* This is the seventh consecutive year SERVPRO has been included in the magazine’s Top 10 list, standing out in a group of more than 951 franchises that qualified for inclusion in the list.

Entrepreneur magazine’s Franchise 500 selection process uses “objective, quantifiable measures of a franchise operation” to help would-be entrepreneurs identify franchise investment opportunities. Some of the most important factors considered by Entrepreneur in developing the list each year are “financial strength and stability, growth rate and size of the system.”

“It’s exciting to be part of a dynamic organization that continues to grow and strives to always provide superior support for its franchisees, and by extension its customers,” said Mentor Hyska, owner of SERVPRO of Grosse Point. “The recognition that the company earns year after year in this prestigious list is confirmation of a commitment to excellence that starts at the top and is evident in the service that each franchisee provides to each and every customer.”

According to Hyska, a number of differentiators set SERVPRO apart from the competition and fuel the attractiveness of the company to both existing franchisees and would-be entrepreneurs looking for a strong business opportunity. Key among these are:

·         SERVPRO’s strength as a brand with a national footprint, wide-spread market penetration, laser-focused brand messaging, and the ability to create national partnerships with organizations such as the PGA TOUR and the American Red Cross.

·         SERVPRO’s commitment to being a learning organization, which keeps training and support at the forefront of the company’s culture and philosophy of success and helps franchisees plan, track, and deliver best-in-class services to consumers.

·         SERVPRO’s focus on continued development and support for proprietary software and systems to allow the company’s operational capacity to keep pace with an aggressive growth strategy.

Sue Steen, SERVPRO Industries, Inc., chief executive officer, adds, “One of the potential pitfalls of growing too quickly is outpacing your capacity to train and support the franchisees. SERVPRO® is a conservative company, and early on we took the time to build a strong system and put the building blocks in place to support growth without sacrificing support to our franchisees.”

“Today,” Steen continues, “as a mature franchise organization with more than 1,700 locations under a single brand, recognition like this makes it clear we are reaping the rewards of having laid a solid foundation and a framework to handle quick growth. As our brand continues to grow, we will continue our winning strategy of supporting and improving upon our infrastructure and investing resources in training and support.”
